Getting Stoned in Abha
A couple of months ago while walking across the rubbish laden landscape that kind of sums up Saudi Arabia, off to work, in my seriously western black double breasted suit, past the gates of the decrepit high school that sits opposite my apartment, I actually got stoned! By rocks I mean,
The first slammed into some leaves behind me & I thought that was weird, was that for me? A second one skidded past by feet, and yes indeed, so it seemed, I was the target for these projectiles. Something evil & ignorant was going down & I snapped and I shouted " ANA(I am) MUSLIM!" but more were flying at me at a rush and I could see the white robed figures launching them, kind of laughing in the bright morning sunlight.
I didn't really think about it, & instinctively with clenched jawed and with intoxicating anger, I bent down and found a few rocks and I hoped all the years of cricketing didn't go to waste and like a madman with adrenalin surging, I started throwing them back in an explosive flurry. The shabab (or Arabic for youths or hoodlums) of the school started shouting and running in all directions some laughing at the bit of sport with the ajnabi westerner, since I wasn't wearing the thaube {company policy: as an English teacher, I gotta look like an Englishman, the well-trained example of one that I am...feel like a monkey sometimes}
Meanwhile I scrambled up the sharp slope to higher ground and I saw I had the advantage of now larger rocks at my feet, while they, stuck inside the bars of the school, had but pebbles. Without a second thought I spied a beauty, an oblong 1kg monster at least, and in a flash I heaved it up & let it fly with a huge grunt, it slowly sailed towards them rotating gracefully, only then did the consequences flash to mind if it actually hit someone: unconscious possibly dead kids, uncomprehending ignorant police, shariah court, massive fine of maybe a million riyal, confiscation of my passport & the next twenty years paying it off as a hostage, (which actually happens from time to time) AAAAAH so my heart was in my mouth and I felt definitely and very suddenly sick as I tracked it's arc across the sky, I desperately prayed to God that it wouldn't hit anyone, luckily it was easy to see and one of the nearest young bedu, scurried away with his head turned strenuously backwards undoubtedly swearing in Arabic and in a loud thud! It landed in huge cloud of dust and I heaved a sigh of relief and by then I was out of range of the smaller pebbles still being enthusiastically launched in my general direction
Although still fuming at the ignorance of these kids, I was immediately and intensely ashamed of myself and remembered only then the sufi tale of the wandering dervish who was similarly stoned by children as he passed through some village but who smiled as he bled and said something like, 'By God, shall I step closer to make it easier for you?'
May most merciful God forgive and guide me, such conduct is indeed further from me than I thought and Humbled was I,
and Glory Be To Him Who Maketh It So,
Peace & Blessings to All Who Chance Upon This,:)
